lodge 18 suites in 9 cottages, plus a separate family cottage — Elewana calls the latter a family cottage and Go2Africa names it the Stable Cottage with three en-suite bedrooms. Both sources agree on nine cottages and eighteen suites.

The Manor stands on a working Arabica coffee estate of about 1,500 acres in the Karatu highlands, on the approach road to the Ngorongoro Crater. The buildings are Cape Dutch in style, and guests are accommodated in cottage suites, each with its own courtyard, deck, sitting area, indoor fireplace and outdoor fire pit. The main manor house holds a wine cellar, cinema, snooker room, library, sauna, steam room and pool. Days are spent on crater game drives, with bush picnics on the crater floor, trips to Olduvai Gorge and Lake Manyara, and Maasai market visits; on the estate itself there are coffee tours, guided walks, horse riding and mountain biking.

What sets it apart

It is a country-estate hotel with horse riding and a working coffee farm rather than a safari camp, used as a comfortable base outside the conservation area gate.

Who it suits

Crater day trips from outside the gate; horse riding; families and longer stays.

About the photographs

The pictures on this page are stock photographs of African bush and desert country, chosen to suggest the kind of landscape you find around the Ngorongoro highlands of northern Tanzania. They are not photographs of this property, and we cannot verify where any of them was taken — a stock library records the photographer, not the place. We use them rather than borrow the property's own marketing images, which would imply we had been there. For pictures of the rooms, see the property's own site.
