Damaraland Camp is a Wilderness camp in the Huab River valley, operated as a joint venture with the communal Torra Conservancy, with a share of revenue going to local development including the village of DeRiet. Ten elevated adobe-and-thatch suites look out over the valley. The area has no fences and wildlife is desert-adapted rather than dense: elephant that move along the dry riverbeds, oryx, springbok, and occasional lion and rhino. Activities are nature drives, guided walks, tracking desert-adapted elephant, scorpion walks at night, stargazing, community visits and day trips to the rock engravings at Twyfelfontein. The camp is often cited as one of Namibia's earliest and most successful community joint ventures.

What sets it apart
Its long-running revenue-sharing joint venture with the Torra Conservancy is the model most other Namibian community camps were built on.
Who it suits
Desert-adapted elephant; community-run conservation; Twyfelfontein day trips.

About the photographs
The pictures on this page are stock photographs of African bush and desert country, chosen to suggest the kind of landscape you find around the Greater Maasai Mara, Kenya. They are not photographs of this property, and we cannot verify where any of them was taken — a stock library records the photographer, not the place. We use them rather than borrow the property's own marketing images, which would imply we had been there. For pictures of the rooms, see the property's own site.
