Ngorongoro Serena is built along the crater rim from local river stone, the rooms arranged in a line so that each has a rock-enclosed balcony looking directly down into the caldera. Rooms are standard king, twin and triple at 26 square metres, with larger Kimba suites at 32. Facilities include a split-level restaurant, a bar with a central fireplace, a rim-flow pool, a business centre and the Maisha Spa. Game drives descend onto the crater floor; the lodge also sells crater breakfasts, crater lunches and sundowners as priced extras, and runs guided nature walks, Olduvai Gorge trips, Maasai village visits and evening cultural performances. Nights on the rim are cold.

Every room has a private balcony with a direct view down into the crater, which the conservation area's other large rim lodges do not uniformly offer.
