Gibb's Farm is a farm-based lodge on the forested slopes above Karatu, roughly 20 minutes from the Ngorongoro Crater gate and positioned between Lake Manyara and the crater. It began as a coffee plantation in the late 1920s and still runs as a working farm, with an organic vegetable garden and dairy supplying the kitchen. Guests stay in one-bedroom cottages with fireplaces, indoor and outdoor showers and private verandas, or in one of two two-bedroom houses. Activities centre on the farm itself — coffee roasting, garden and dairy visits — plus guided walks in the adjoining forest and to the crater rim.

What sets it apart

It is a genuine working coffee and vegetable farm rather than a safari camp, so the stay is agricultural and forest-based rather than game-drive-based.

Who it suits

Slower-paced stays either side of a Ngorongoro Crater day; travellers wanting a rest day between parks.

What it costs

No rate is published on the property's own site. Third-party reseller range only, not an official published rate: "from €505–€675 per person sharing, half board, 2027 seasons" per https://www.go2africa.com/accommodation/gibbs-farm, as listed September 2026. No rate is published on the official site.

A reseller's range tells you the bracket, not the price you would pay. We show it because it is the only public figure that exists, and we label it rather than present it as the property's own.

About the photographs

The pictures on this page are stock photographs of African bush and desert country, chosen to suggest the kind of landscape you find around the Ngorongoro Highlands above Karatu, Tanzania. They are not photographs of this property, and we cannot verify where any of them was taken — a stock library records the photographer, not the place. We use them rather than borrow the property's own marketing images, which would imply we had been there. For pictures of the rooms, and of the view they actually look out on, see the property's own site.
