How to Combine a Tanzania Safari with Zanzibar
Last reviewed 21 October 2026. Based on official operator, government and health pages; schedules and rules change, so confirm each point on the linked official source before you travel.
Yes, a Tanzania safari and Zanzibar combine easily, and the usual order is safari first, beach second. The savanna days are early starts and long drives; the islands then serve as a slow, low-effort finish. Both parts sit under one Tanzanian entry system, and domestic flights and ferries link the mainland with the islands.
Why combine a safari with Zanzibar, and why in that order?
A safari is physically busy: early game drives, dust and long days. Putting the beach after it gives you a rest before the long flight home, and it keeps flexibility where it matters. If a safari day is shortened by weather or a flight change, nothing else on the itinerary is hurt, whereas missing a park flight at the end of a beach stay is a much harder problem.
The order also suits the practical side. Safari lodges in the parks are reached from Arusha or by bush flight, while Zanzibar is reached from the mainland by air or sea. Finishing in the north or south of the country and then crossing to the islands makes a clean one-way line instead of a loop.
- Safari first: energy for early mornings, rest at the end.
- Beach second: a buffer day or two before an international departure.
- One country: a single entry process covers the mainland and Zanzibar (see below).
How do you get from the safari circuits to Zanzibar?
There are two broad options: fly or take a ferry from Dar es Salaam. Which one fits depends on where your safari ends.
By air
Coastal Aviation lists both safari destinations (for example Serengeti, Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ruaha and Selous) and Zanzibar, together with Arusha, Kilimanjaro and Dar es Salaam, among its destinations on its own website. That makes a bush-plane-to-island routing something to ask about, but the actual connections and timings must be taken from the operator's current schedule. Other scheduled carriers also serve Zanzibar from Arusha, Kilimanjaro or Dar es Salaam; check the airline pages directly, since routes change.
For a northern-circuit trip (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire), a flight from the Arusha or Kilimanjaro area is the usual idea. Compare it with the park comparison in Serengeti vs Ngorongoro when deciding where the safari should finish.
By ferry from Dar es Salaam
Azam Marine states on its website that it offers daily commutes between Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, Pemba and Tanga. This is the natural choice after a southern-circuit safari (such as Selous or Ruaha) when you pass through Dar es Salaam anyway. Sailing times, frequencies and any seasonal changes are not fixed here: check the operator's current timetable, and leave margin before any onward flight.
Do you need a separate visa for Zanzibar?
The official Tanzania Immigration eVisa portal (visa.immigration.go.tz) states that you can apply for an online visa to visit the United Republic of Tanzania, covering both Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar. You fill in the form, pay and submit online, then are notified by e-mail whether the application is accepted or rejected, and you can track its status. The portal also notes that applicants may be required to visit an embassy or consular office for an interview.
Whether you need a visa at all depends on your nationality, so use the portal and our overview of safari country visa and entry requirements. Do not rely on third-party "e-visa" sites that only look official.
What about malaria and yellow fever on a combined trip?
The US CDC page for Tanzania, which is titled "Tanzania, including Zanzibar", lists malaria prophylaxis as recommended for areas below 1,800 metres elevation, notes chloroquine resistance, and names atovaquone-proguanil, doxycycline, mefloquine and tafenoquine as options. Its yellow fever guidance says the vaccine is generally not recommended for travel to Tanzania and is not required for direct travel from the US, but is required for travellers aged one year or older arriving from countries with risk of yellow fever virus transmission. Transit stops longer than 12 hours in such countries count too.
The CDC page does not give separate Zanzibar rules, so do not assume the islands are risk-free. Choice of medication is a decision for a doctor or travel clinic. Our guides on malaria on safari and safari vaccination requirements cover the official guidance in more detail, including the case of arriving via Kenya or another country.
When is the best time to pair safari and Zanzibar?
Tanzanian climate has two rainy periods in most of the country. In reporting on Tanzania Meteorological Authority outlooks, the heaviest rains (Masika) typically fall from mid-March to May and the shorter rains (Vuli) from October to December. These are long-run patterns, and each year's seasonal outlook can differ; in the 2024 Vuli outlook, for example, the TMA expected prolonged dry spells and below-normal rainfall in Unguja and Pemba. Check the current outlook on the TMA website.
In practice, the sensible approach is to choose your safari timing first (animal movement and park conditions) and then check the island weather for the same weeks. Use the best time for a Tanzania safari, the Great Migration month by month and the best time to visit Zanzibar together, and look for the overlap. If your dates fall in a rainy window, it does not make a trip impossible, but expect more variable weather and ask operators about road and airstrip conditions.
Which checklist should you run through before booking?
- Confirm your visa need and apply only through the official portal.
- Check passport validity and any requirement from your airline for onward travel.
- Decide where the safari ends (north or south) and choose flight or ferry accordingly.
- Read the current operator timetables for flights and ferries; do not rely on old blog schedules.
- Leave a buffer day between the ferry or domestic flight and your international departure.
- Check baggage rules for small bush planes, which are usually stricter than for large aircraft; ask the operator.
- Speak to a doctor or travel clinic about malaria and yellow fever, with your exact route in hand.
- Check the seasonal weather outlook for both the parks and the coast.
- Buy travel insurance that covers domestic flights and sea crossings.
